Jordan: 23 MoU to invest $ 40 million in electricity storage

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources signed memorandums of understanding with 23 companies qualified to invest in the project of storage of electrical energy on the transport network with a capacity of 30 MW for two hours (60 MW) and at an investment cost of about 40 million dollars.

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Dr. Saleh Al-Kharabsheh stressed on Tuesday the importance of the project, which is funded by the private sector, to maintain the stability of the electrical transmission network from the current fluctuations in the grid, especially from the renewable energy projects of Sun and Wind. On the contents of the memorandums of understanding, Minister Kharabsheh said that the companies shall, during the period of validity of the six-month notes, prepare their technical and financial offers and submit them to the Ministry in accordance with the duration and requirements of the direct bid document to be supplied to the companies later. ) For the year 2015 and its amendments.

The project is expected to be completed by the middle of next year according to the project schedule, which is the first of its kind in the region and will serve as the first phase of a major energy storage project.

In December 2017, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources announced the rehabilitation of requests for interest received from companies interested in investing in the electric power storage project on the electricity transmission network of the National Electricity Company, where 23 of the 41 companies that showed interest in the project were rehabilitated.

In August 2017, applications for interest in the project were opened through a direct supply system that is fully owned and operated with full private funding. It can store up to 30 MW for two hours (60 MW).

The energy storage project on the transportation network comes within the framework of legislation and procedures approved by the government to increase the contribution of renewable energy in the total energy mixture, which reached 500 megawatts by the end of 2017, reaching about 2,700 MW in 2021 of the total generating capacity of the Kingdom.
