Emirates International Aluminum Company, the largest industrial company in the UAE outside the oil and gas sector, today announced that cement plants in the UAE will be supplied with nearly all of its carbon dust produced by the aluminum smelting process to be used as alternative fuel for their plants.
The move is further enhanced by the joint cooperation between Emirates International Aluminum Company and local cement companies to reuse secondary aluminum smelting products and is part of its efforts to maximize benefits to all industrial sectors in the country and to contribute to the creation of a national cyclical economy by recycling industry waste as feedstock In another industry.
Emirates Cement also supplies UAE cement companies with the consumer cell membrane, a secondary product of aluminum smelting, for use in the cement industry, and has explored the possibility of using carbon dust in the industry.
Carbon dust is produced during the manufacture of anodes and large carbon blocks consumed during aluminum smelting, and because of its high carbon content, it makes it suitable for use as an alternative fuel.
Over the next two years, Emirates Aluminum will increase its supply of carbon dust to UAE cement plants to 78,000 tonnes.
The use of carbon dust will reduce the requirements of UAE cement companies for other fuels, including in some cases coal imported from as far away as South Africa, and is expected to provide about 36,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions over the next two years, Equivalent to removing 7,800 vehicles from roads.
Emirates International Aluminum will supply the newly produced carbon dust and other by-products produced over the past years to cement plants, while the company is currently developing large-scale industrial uses of carbon dust.
The company also signed a contract for the treatment and reuse of stored carbon dust with Heavy Machinery Viqa, a company that specializes in the recovery and recycling of by-products of heavy industries in the UAE.
Salman Daoud Abdullah, Executive Vice President, Health, Safety, Security, Environment, Quality and Business Development, said: “The reuse of carbon dust produced by our company reinforces the environmental performance of aluminum smelting and the cement industry as well. Our efforts to create a circular economy In the UAE, and enhancing the environmental and economic responsibility of the national industries. We are proud of our drive to achieve this approach through cooperation with UAE cement companies. ”
It is noteworthy that Emirates International Aluminum Company has been able to recycle more than 102 thousand tons of waste last year, progressing to its performance during 2017, during which it recycled 96 thousand tons of waste.
