The Central Bank introduces the new 1,000 dirham banknote for circulation

Abu Dhabi, April 6, The Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates introduces the new 1,000 dirham banknote, made of polymer material, for trading in the markets, and it will be available in banks and exchange shops, as of Monday, April 10, 2023.
In designing this category, the Central Bank was keen to highlight the success story of the United Arab Emirates with cultural and developmental images and symbols that reflect the pioneering global achievements of the country by embodying the forward-looking vision and ambition that turned into reality for the UAE to be one of the pioneers of space exploration.
The aesthetic characteristics appear in the design of this new banknote by using varying and consistent shades of brown, which is used in the banknote of the same category currently in circulation, with the aim of facilitating its identification by the public. In addition, the design highlights the visual media identity of the state and a mixture of graphics, ornamentation and inscriptions executed with various techniques of intaglio and advanced embossed printing.
The front face is adorned with a picture of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, “may God rest his soul in peace,” as he looks at a model of a space shuttle when meeting with NASA officials in 1974. Also, this ambition was achieved through the Emirates mission to explore Mars in 2021 Which was embodied in the design by placing the image of the “Probe of Hope” on the front side of this new banknote above the image of the space shuttle. The arrival of the first astronaut from the UAE was also expressed by placing a picture of the astronaut as a security mark that appears on the security chips on both sides of the banknote.
The design of the back side of this new banknote included an image of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, which will play a key role in diversifying and sustaining energy sources in the country and reducing carbon emissions.
In order to enhance confidence and combat counterfeiting, this new banknote is characterized by advanced security features that include modern technologies, such as the technology known as “SPARK Flow® DIMENSIONS”, which is used for the first time in banknotes circulated in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. In addition, the security foil technology known as “KINEGRAM COLORS®”, making the UAE the first country in the Middle East and North Africa region to use the largest security foil tape of this type in banknotes.
In addition to the distinguished visual effects in terms of security and aesthetics, prominent symbols in Braille have been added to help blind and visually impaired customers identify, through touch, this banknote and determine its value.
This new banknote will be traded alongside the current banknote of the same denomination in circulation, as it is a guaranteed value banknote under the law.
The Central Bank has previously coordinated directly with the concerned companies that provide cash deposit and withdrawal devices in the country to reprogram their devices and ensure the acceptance of this new banknote.
The Central Bank had recently won the award for the best banknote issuance for the year 2023 for this new banknote, due to its unique designs, technical characteristics and innovative security marks at the regional level. This came as part of the award ceremony for banknotes and identity documents that was held on the sidelines of the High Security Printing Conference for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, which was held recently in the capital, Abu Dhabi.
His Excellency Khalid Muhammad Salem Belama Al Tamimi, Governor of the Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates, said: “The launch of this new banknote, which was printed from environmentally friendly polymer material, coincides with the wise leadership’s initiative to declare 2023 as the year of sustainability, and embodies the features of the new phase initiated by the UAE.” In the development march and ambitious future plans.. This version also comes with its unique technical characteristics to keep pace with global technology and technologies, in our keenness to make the dirham an international currency used on an international scale.”
