Saudi ports achieve an increase of 17.57% in container handling and 14.96% in competition during the first quarter of 2023 AD

The General Authority for Ports “Mawani” announced an increase in the number of handling containers in its ports during the first quarter of 2023, by 17.57%, to reach 2,011,162 standard containers, compared to 1,710,608 standard containers in the corresponding quarter of 2022, as a result of the continuous development operations that have been undertaken. It is working on it within the framework of raising the level of operational and logistical performance and improving the competitiveness of services provided to beneficiaries.
This comes within the framework of the initiatives launched by “Mawani” to design various solutions, operating models and systems that contribute to supporting growth plans and providing an attractive environment for investment, as well as to improve the efficiency of operational processes by facilitating and re-engineering procedures and using the latest technologies. In line with the objectives of the National Strategy for Transport and Logistics Services, to consolidate the Kingdom’s position as a global logistics center and a hub for the convergence of three continents.
The number of containers issued during the first quarter of 2023 witnessed an increase of 16.08%, to reach 559,829 containers, compared to 513,273 containers in the corresponding quarter of 2022. The number of incoming containers increased by 22.43%, recording 637,277 containers, compared to 520,509 containers in the corresponding period of 2022.
While transshipment containers witnessed an increase of 14.96% and 778,056 containers, compared to 676,826 containers in the first quarter of 2022, as a result of providing the highest levels of logistics services, using modern technologies with international specifications for remote operation, as well as concluding distinguished strategic partnerships with major international shipping lines.
During the first quarter of 2023, Saudi ports recorded an increase in the total tonnage handled, reaching 75,552,598 tons, an increase of 4.11% compared to 72,570,201 tons in the same period of 2022. General cargo achieved 1,597,014 tons, solid bulk 12,503,063 tons, and liquid bulk 39,822. ,296 tons.
Tons of foodstuffs witnessed an increase of 14.97% during the first quarter of 2023, to reach 5,785,004 tons, compared to 5,031,957 tons in the first quarter of 2022 AD.
In the same context; The first quarter of the year recorded the import of 258,051 cars, an increase of 35.52% compared to the first quarter of the previous year, which recorded 190,422 cars. Maritime traffic witnessed an increase of 11.48%, reaching 2,855 ships compared to 2,561 ships in 2022, and received 304,610 passengers, an increase of 34.29% over the first quarter of 2022. 2022, which witnessed the reception of 226,838 passengers.
It is noteworthy that “Mawani” seeks to consolidate its competitiveness and presence in the maritime transport sector and ports by increasing maritime freight services, as between “2020-2023” some 23 shipping services were added by major international shipping lines, which contributed to the Kingdom’s achievement of the highest regional progress. In the Maritime Network Connectivity Index issued by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), it currently has a score of “71.33”.
