Study: Melting sea ice caused by climate change is making the Arctic Ocean more acidic

An international team led by Chinese scientists has revealed that the Arctic Ocean is acidifying much faster than elsewhere in the open world ocean due to the melting of sea ice there.

The results of the study published in the journal “Science” showed that acidification rates in the western Arctic Ocean are 3 to 4 times faster than in other ocean basins.

The study indicated that the increase in carbon dioxide caused by human activity led to an increase in the acidity of seawater and the mineral saturated calcium carbonate to a lesser extent, a process called ocean acidification.
