DB World implements the BoxBay system at a South Korean container terminal

Dubai, March 8, DB World announced the first commercial use of the environmentally friendly and automated BoxBay system for storing containers on elevated pallets at Busan Container Terminal in South Korea, the sixth largest container port in the world.
The achievement, the first of its kind in the world, reinforces the position of the UAE and the Emirate of Dubai, which is distinguished globally in the ports and logistics sector.

The DB World group continues to adopt innovative ways to enhance the efficiency of transportation operations and contribute to maintaining the global trade flow through the use of advanced technology and innovative solutions that will maintain the smooth flow of trade.
The partnership agreement was signed today between Busan Newport Company (PNC) and Boxbay Free Zone, in the Jebel Ali Free Zone (Jafza) in Dubai, in the presence of Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Chairman and CEO of DB World Group, and Burkhard Dahmen, Chairman and CEO of the German “SMS” group, which developed the “BoxPay” system in partnership with the “DB World” group.

The agreement details plans to carry out the design and engineering works for the new storage system at the Busan Container Terminal site. .
The BoxBay system will be seamlessly integrated with the operations of automated rail and truck cranes to update a vacant storage area for containers. The total time taken by trucks to transport containers within the terminal by up to 20%, which constitutes a qualitative addition to the cargo delivery services provided by Busan Newport to its customers.
Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Chairman and CEO of the DB World Group, said: “We start in DB World from Dubai’s world-leading position in the ports and logistics sector, and its continuous approach to adopting modern methods that support the flow of global trade. Frame The design of ‘Box Bay’ comes as a unique container storage system in the field of international trade, which was developed by “DB World” in cooperation with the German “SMS” group.
Bin Sulayem expressed his happiness at DB World’s leadership of this qualitative innovation and the experimental results of the system in Jebel Ali port, which revealed the advantages of a fully automated system for storing containers on elevated platforms, which takes advantage of sustainable energy sources, indicating the group’s intention to spread the use of this technology. Revolutionary around the world, after its application in the Busan Container Terminal.
“We have long invested in new and innovative technology, which will improve and modernize our facilities at ports and terminals, as it represents an important step forward to announce the first commercial use BoxBay system..Busan Newport is a future-focused model station in terms of technical development in its operations.By introducing BoxBay container warehousing system on elevated pallets, we will be able to provide better service to our customers, while continuing our endeavor To maintain the safety of our employees and reduce carbon emissions resulting from our business environment.”

The “DB World” group, a leading provider of integrated smart logistics solutions, announced the start of the first commercial operation of the “Boxbay” automated and environmentally friendly system for storing containers on elevated platforms, following the success of the pilot program for this technology in Jebel Ali Port since January 2021. It has been tested by the world’s leading port operators.
Despite the challenges that the logistics sector has faced in container handling recently, this announcement confirms the importance of finding innovative solutions for the most important economic sectors, specifically the logistics services sector in container ports, with the aim of combining enhancing efficiency and achieving environmental goals.
Busan Newport operates one of the best-performing container terminals in Asia. The addition of BoxBay’s elevated pallet storage technology will allow Busan Newport to further enhance the efficiency of its operations within the terminal.
The BoxBay system is the product of the joint venture between dbworld and the German industrial engineering group SMS, which developed the elevated pallet storage system for the handling of heavy metal coils.

After this technology proved its feasibility in the metals sector, it was developed for port logistics, as DB World and SMS Group built a pilot facility at Container Terminal 4 in Jebel Ali Port in January 2021. By the end of June 2022 The handling of 190,000 containers was carried out in real operating conditions, and the effectiveness of the system was confirmed to enter the commercial marketing phase.
The BoxBay system is fully automated, with built-in safety elements, and dbworld plans to power it to operate using solar energy through photovoltaic panels on the roof of the storage system, supporting dbworld’s strategy and efforts to reduce the percentage of to zero carbon in its operations globally.
It is worth noting that DB World owns a 66% stake in Busan Newport, which handled 5.3 million TEUs in 2021, and the company operates in Busan port.
