Dubai Electricity and Water awards construction contract for its new headquarters building at a cost of over AED 1 billion

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has awarded the AED 981,960,889 construction contract for its new main building, Al Sheraa Building, to a consortium comprising Ghantoot Transport and General Contracting Company and Ghantoot Gulf Contracting.
DEWA awarded the first phase of construction works worth Dh46 million to Datco Balfour Beatty, bringing the total construction value to more than Dh1 billion.
The Al Sheraa Building in Dubai’s Al Jaddaf area will be the world’s tallest, largest and smartest zero-energy government building, with total energy consumption equal to or less than the energy it produces throughout the year.
The building was designed to achieve the LEED Platinum certification – Energy Leadership and Environmental Design – and WELL Global Green Building Standards, and the Authority will later launch two phases of the IoT, AI and Solar PV systems in the building.
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of DEWA, ​​said: “We are working to achieve the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, which aims to make Dubai an international hub for clean energy and green economy. He pointed out that the new building area is more than two million square feet and will include 15 floors in addition to a basement and 4 floors of parking capacity of up to 5,000 people. The building will also include a conference hall for more than 500 people, training halls, an innovation center, an exhibition hall, a nursery for female staff, a gym and other facilities. The building will include more than 1,000 square meters of compact PV panels. The total renewable energy that the building will produce is more than 6,500 MWh per year.
The design of the ‘Sail Building’ simulates the traditional houses in the UAE in terms of indoor spaces overlooking an open courtyard where the courtyard will be the main point and the most important centerpiece of the building.
The building will allow IoT technologies, large and open data technologies, artificial intelligence and state-of-the-art smart building management.
Water consumption in the building is expected to be 50% lower than conventional buildings.
