A large number of employees quit Thursday, after Elon Musk issued an ultimatum telling them they needed to be prepared to commit to a “hardcore” work environment.
Messages on an internal employee chat platform showed numerous messages from engineers and other employees posting their farewell messages by Musk’s deadline just a day earlier.
Three Twitter employees who spoke with CNBC asked not to be named, citing fear of professional retaliation. The three were planning to resign. It was not clear exactly how many Twitter employees quit. On Wednesday, Musk sent a company-wide email telling employees to expect “long hours at a high intensity” if they wanted to stay on the job.
Musk followed this up on Thursday with emails that said managers should meet with employees in person once a week or at least monthly, and that managers could be fired to allow employees to work remotely if those employees did not demonstrate “excellent” or “exceptional” levels of performance. .
Musk has asked some of the top engineers who chose to resign to consider staying, according to a Twitter engineer familiar with the situation.
The latest wave of resignations is adding to what is now a mass layoff and voluntary exodus from Twitter, making the company much smaller than it was when Musk took over in late October.
One of the engineers said the resignations hurt important parts of the company’s engineering operations.
“Entire teams representing critical infrastructure are leaving voluntarily, putting the company at a serious risk to its ability to recover,” wrote the engineer, who said they were handing in their resignations on Thursday.
The engineer added that many of those who left Twitter did not feel the need to stay, and they only know two people will stay, one of them because the company sponsored their visa entry to the United States.
“We are skilled professionals and have plenty of options, so Elon didn’t give us reasons to stay,” they wrote.
