1.437 billion dirhams to build a hydroelectric plant using the water of Hatta Dam

Dubai-08-17-2019
The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has awarded a contract to build the first project of its kind in the Arabian Gulf, the hydroelectric power station, utilizing the water stored at Hatta Dam, for a total value of AED 1,437 billion. Andritz Hydro and Ozkar.
The French group EDF was appointed as the project consultant. The hydroelectric plant has a production capacity of 250 megawatts and a life span of 80 years. The project is expected to be operational in February 2024. The hydroelectric power plant will rely on the utilization of water stored in the Hatta Dam and another overhead reservoir to be constructed in the mountainous region. Turbines based on clean, cheap solar power, when available from the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, will pump water from the dam to the upper reservoir. Turbines are utilized to take advantage of the thrust of water from the upper reservoir to produce electricity and to supply the body’s network when needed. The efficiency of the cycle of electricity production and storage will reach 80% with an immediate response to energy demand within 90 seconds.
The vital strategic project will contribute to the diversification of energy sources, the development of Hatta and meet its developmental, social, economic and environmental needs. It will also contribute to achieving the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy to provide 75% of Dubai’s energy from clean energy sources by 2050.
The project comes within the framework of the initiatives adopted by the Authority to provide leading and innovative job opportunities for citizens in quality projects, in addition to providing a center for visitors, outdoor activities and tourist facilities associated with the project, which will contribute to support the sustainable development of the region and the promotion of Hatta as the most prominent tourist attractions in the Emirate of Dubai .
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of DEWA, said: “We are working to support sustainable development, preserve natural resources and achieve economic, social and environmental development, in line with the aspirations of good leadership. We have relied on hydroelectric power as we strive to achieve the goals of the Dubai Energy Strategy. Clean 2050, to transform the emirate into a global center for clean energy and green economy, and increase the proportion of clean energy in Dubai to reach 75% by 2050, where hydroelectric power, which is the electricity generated from the potential of hydropower, Far the most important renewable and clean energy sources in the world. “
