200 million gallons per day production of desalination plant in Taweelah, Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi 11-09-2019
His Excellency Othman Juma Al Ali, CEO of Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EOC), a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi Energy Corporation (ADEC) and the sole insurer of any electricity and water production capacity in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, has confirmed that the desalination plant in Al Taweelah, Abu Dhabi The latter year of 2022 will produce about 200 million gallons (909,200 cubic meters) per day based on reverse osmosis desalination technology, which will be one of the most cost-efficient and energy-efficient desalination plants in the world.
Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EOC) announced the signing of a “water purchase” agreement with Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power, a strategic partner in the construction of the new desalination plant in Al Taweelah, Abu Dhabi.
According to the agreement, Emirates Water and Electricity Company will purchase water from the Taweelah plant, located 45 km north of Abu Dhabi, for a period of 30 years from the commencement date of the plant’s operation scheduled for the last quarter of 2022.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the World Energy Conference in Abu Dhabi, Othman Juma Al Ali said that this year there have been many achievements made by the company, where Noor Abu Dhabi, the largest solar power plant, has been operating at the lowest prices in the world. Subsequently, we issued a tender for the largest solar power plant with a capacity of 1500 GW, which is supposed to be completed and operational in 2022.
He pointed out that the desalination plant in Al Taweelah area in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi operates reverse osmosis technology and has new standards in terms of size and cost of water produced, which will be 44 percent larger than the largest existing plant in the world using this technology.
He stressed that this project will contribute to secure the demand for drinking water in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, noting that the choice of reverse osmosis technology will play a key role in reducing the cost of water production and contribute to the efforts to achieve the company’s objectives to develop the energy and water sector more sustainable and efficient. Reduce the cost of fuel across the sector with the flexibility the technology will provide.
For his part, Paddy Padmanathan, President and CEO of Aqua Power, said that the quotation we have made to implement Taweelah water plant reflects our confidence in EWEC as a distinguished partner and confirms our commitment to contribute to the development process of the UAE by increasing our participation in the generation sectors. Energy and water desalination.
Upon completion, the plant will contribute to the UAE’s vision of reducing CO2 emissions and reducing gas consumption by separating energy and water production during the summer and winter seasons.
The construction of the plant is based on the principle of building, owning and operating, while Abingua and Borcina will undertake engineering and construction works and purchase the materials required for the construction of the water plant under a joint venture agreement.
ACWA Power indirectly owns 40 per cent of the shares in the independent product system, which was set up to manage the Taweelah Independent Desalination Plant, while Abu Dhabi Energy and Mubadala own 60 per cent.
