The meetings of the Economic and Social Council begin next week in preparation for the Arab Summit

The preparatory meetings of the 104th regular session of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) will begin next week at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States, starting on September 1, the meeting of the Social Committee, while the Economic Committee will hold its meetings on 2 and 3 September and then senior officials will meet On 4 September, the Council will be held at the ministerial level on 5 September under the chairmanship of Palestine, succeeding the Sultanate of Oman.
The meetings will discuss the economic and social file of the Arab League Council at the level of the next Arab Summit in its 31st session, which will be held in March next, as well as follow-up implementation of the decisions of the 103rd session of the Economic and Social Council and the activity of the Secretariat between the sessions of the Council 103 and 104 in the social and economic aspects.
The meeting will also discuss a report on the follow-up to the implementation of the resolutions of the Arab Development, Economic and Social Summit at its fourth session held in Beirut last January.
The Social Committee will discuss the Statute of the Arab Council for Population and Development, an item on the opening of the Arab Children’s Parliament in the Emirate of Sharjah and a project for the protection of women in the informal sector “Tea and Food Saleswomen” at the request of Sudan.
The Social Committee is also discussing an initiative to empower unemployed youth in the light of social protection and international Arab cooperation in the social and developmental fields and the reports and decisions of the ministerial councils and committees.
The Social Committee will also discuss an item on the draft Arab Strategy for the Economic and Social Empowerment of Women in Rural Areas at the request of Tunisia and an item on the establishment of the Arab Center for Economic Empowerment Studies at the request of Palestine.
The Economic Commission will discuss the follow-up to the implementation of the resolutions of the Arab-African Summit in its fourth session held in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea and the preparation for the fifth summit, in addition to the follow-up to the implementation of the Riyadh Declaration issued by the Fourth Summit of the Arab and South American countries held in Riyadh in November 2015.
The committee will discuss the focus of the session: the Greater Arab Free Trade Area and the developments of the Arab Customs Union, as well as an item on investment in the Arab countries.
The Economic Committee will also discuss a number of periodic items related to supporting the Palestinian economy, the unified Arab economic report for 2019, the unified Arab speech for the joint annual meeting of the IMF and the World Bank for 2019 and the Arab food security report for 2018, in addition to a number of issues related to the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development and discussion of the reports and resolutions of the councils.
