In a statement to the Saudi Press Agency, he said: Environmental monitoring is the constant companion of the Red Sea project from the planning stage until the initial and current construction stage, and until its completion – God willing -, as the company seeks to increase the percentage of seaweeds that absorb carbon dioxide, and increase the percentage of mangroves and people Coral reefs in marine areas, in addition to its endeavor to identify areas of high environmental value, which is what it has already reached as it has approved the development of 22 islands out of the 90 islands in the site, in order to make it a tourist destination with a different environmental character.
He added: We knew from the beginning of the project’s development that this area would become a destination for renewable tourism, and that its ecosystem is very sensitive, and to ensure the diversity and ecological balance we aspire to by 2040, we have carried out comprehensive environmental surveys of all project lands, taking into account the long-term environmental impacts of the project’s operational work.
He added: The company’s environmental team plays a prominent role in most aspects of the project as it focuses on enhancing the environment by selecting appropriate engineering designs, and adhering to environmental considerations, whether pre-established or subsequent at any stage of the project development, but also on cooperating with relevant external regulatory authorities. Relevance to ensure that the project’s sustainable commitments are implemented in an appropriate manner.
Regarding the environmental initiatives that the company is working on, the Executive Director of Environment and Sustainability stated that the company has launched an initiative bearing the slogan “Red Sea Blossom”, an initiative in which it cooperated with the National Center for Vegetation Development and the University of Tabuk to incubate 17 thousand seedlings of local plants in the project nursery. , Through which the company trained volunteer university students to care for seedlings to reach the appropriate length, so that after several months they would plant them at the project site.
He indicated that the company has contributed to the “Green Saudi” and “Green Middle East” initiatives, which are concerned with reducing carbon emissions, reducing noise, achieving environmental balance, providing natural environments and a safe haven for living creatures, improving landscapes, in addition to increasing awareness of the importance of the environment. And community participation in preserving it, as the company inaugurated in February of last year 2020 the plant nursery for the project, which is the largest in the region in order to cultivate everything that would serve the project environment of plants suitable for the environment of the Red Sea and its coasts.
