The opening of the Smart Grid Station in Ruwiya

Media In Dubai – 20 January 2019 / WAM /
HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Air Authority and Chairman of Emirates Airline, Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, opened the Smart Grid station of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) in the Ruwai region of Dubai.
The move comes as a result of the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai to make Dubai the smartest and most successful city in the world through the Dubai Smart Initiative.
The plant was built in cooperation with the Korea Electric Power Company (KEPCO) as a result of the exchange of experience and expertise between the two parties to implement the latest smart city standards and smart grid around the world.
The establishment of the Smart Grid station was part of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority’s efforts to develop technologies to link smart buildings to exchange information, improve energy and water efficiency and optimize renewable energy in smart cities.
His Excellency Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum briefed His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer on the various sections of the Smart Grid Station, which is a platform that uses a variety of smart grid technologies to generate energy through renewable sources such as solar and wind power and maximize energy efficiency through monitoring and control. Direct load reduction especially at peak times and load conversion and control and rationalize water consumption.
The Smart Station, Smart Building and Smart Plant. The concept of the Smart Grid Station is a gradual concept and provides the opportunity to develop smart buildings separately or collectively as well as developing smart areas to ensure Efficiency of reducing electricity and water consumption and reducing carbon emissions in order to reach the Smart City.
The Smart Grid includes a 200 kW solar PV system, a 9 kW wind power system and a 500 kW lithium-ion battery system to store the energy produced and used when needed.
The station also includes more than 2,000 sensors based on Internet technology and smart meters distributed throughout the facility to monitor real-time energy and water demand to improve power and water management while reducing demand when necessary by eliminating unnecessary loads by controlling smart lighting Smart power outlets and intelligent air conditioning system.
The station has been connected to an intelligent cooling system through the building management system as well as a 100-ton thermal storage system to store the additional cooling capacity so that it can be used when needed and thus reduce the demand for the cooling system.
