US stocks close lower as trade fears mount with China

US stocks tumbled today, as trade tensions between the United States and China surged, raising concerns linked to global growth and driving investors away from high-risk assets.
The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was down 472.17 points, or 1.79 percent, at 25,966.31. The benchmark S & P 500 index shed 48.38 points, or 1.65 percent, to 2,884.09. The Nasdaq Composite Index shed 159.53 points, or 1.96 percent, to 7,793.76.
