The UAE produces 300,000 tons of hydrogen annually

Abu Dhabi, October 22 / WAM /

The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company “ADNOC” – based on its belief in the promising potential offered by hydrogen and its fuels as new sources of low-carbon energy.. is working on the implementation of many projects and initiatives aimed at taking advantage of the opportunities offered by hydrogen.

The UAE and Abu Dhabi have a proven track record and great industrial capabilities across the value chain of the energy sector, in addition to their distinguished geographical location, which qualifies them to take advantage of potential opportunities in the field of hydrogen projects, and contribute to consolidating the leadership position of the UAE and Abu Dhabi in the emerging hydrogen economy.

Yesterday’s celebration of the arrival of the first trial shipment of low-carbon hydrogen-based ammonia produced by ADNOC to the Federal Republic of Germany was an important step in these efforts aimed at creating a comprehensive hydrogen value chain between the UAE and various markets around the world, as the country aims to acquire 25% of the low carbon hydrogen market share in 2030, and Germany is a key market to achieve this.

According to the Hydrogen Council, a global initiative aimed at accelerating the adoption of hydrogen as a key solution to keep pace with the energy transition, hydrogen is expected to represent up to 18% of global energy demand by 2050.

Low-carbon ammonia, which is manufactured using carbon dioxide that provides capture, use and storage technologies, plays an important role as a starting point towards achieving the transformation of the energy sector on a large scale due to its low cost of production, allowing it to be provided at competitive prices, as well as the possibility of increasing its production quickly and low Its carbon intensity levels are lower than many other fuels available in the market.

Hydrogen and its carrier fuels, such as ammonia, are all important to enable clean fuel production to keep pace with decarbonization efforts from industrial and transportation sectors where it is difficult to reduce. To this end, ADNOC is exploring the production of “blue” hydrogen, by taking advantage of its capabilities in the field of carbon capture, use and storage. ADNOC also plans to explore green hydrogen opportunities through its partnership with Masdar.

ADNOC adopts a proactive and balanced approach to keep pace with the transformation in the energy sector, and is working to develop practical and innovative solutions to secure a low-carbon future, to support the UAE’s initiative to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.

ADNOC is also working on harnessing its distinguished capabilities in the field of hydrogen to lay strong foundations for the carbon-neutral hydrogen market, by implementing ambitious plans for growth and expansion in the field of clean hydrogen, projects to convert waste into energy at the local and international levels, in addition to production projects green hydrogen processing and storage and related auxiliary activities; Which is one of the main means of reducing emissions.

His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the State, may God protect him, had issued directives in November of the year 2021, assigning ADNOC to explore and follow up potential opportunities in the field of hydrogen projects, as a clean fuel to enhance the UAE’s leadership in this field.

Today, ADNOC produces more than 300,000 tons of hydrogen annually in its refining and petrochemical facilities, and these quantities are used mainly for industrial purposes. ADNOC is also currently implementing plans to increase its hydrogen production to 500,000 tons annually, while exploring several new growth opportunities in the field of hydrogen.
