Amazon, the US technology giant, was among five companies selected by the European Central Bank to develop a prototype for the digital euro.
The list of winners of a tender to develop prototypes included the Spanish “CaixaBank”, the French “Worldline SA”, the Italian “Nexi S.p.A.” and “EPI”, and a consortium of External takeover banks and institutions, as well as Amazon, with each company focusing on a specific digital use of the eurozone currency. The European Central Bank said in a statement that the five institutions were selected from among 54 institutions that submitted bids last April to provide the service.
