The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources received 16 offers from companies eligible for investment in solar cell projects in the third round of direct offers to produce 200 MW of electricity.
The Secretary General of the Ministry, Chairman of the Direct Offers Committee Engineer Amani Al Azzam said in a press statement on Wednesday that the ministry will evaluate the technical presentations received and then announce the list of technically qualified companies in preparation for opening financial offers and evaluating the announcement of winning companies, stressing the importance of these projects in achieving the objectives of the strategy National Energy to boost local energy sources in the total energy mix to reduce the value of the oil bill and benefit from clean energy.
In May 2017, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources announced the list of companies eligible for direct offers to invest in renewable energy projects in the third round of direct offers, launched by the end of 2016.
In August, the ministry signed 31 memorandums of understanding with qualified companies to submit direct offers to invest in solar projects within the third round of direct offers. The tenth of April has set a deadline for receiving technical and financial offers for these projects.
The third round includes direct offers of 300 MW solar and wind generating projects, 45 companies submitted to implement solar power projects with capacity of 200 megawatts and wind power projects with capacity of 100 megawatts, while the ministry set the month of November next deadline for receiving the applications of companies eligible for wind projects 14 a company.
The third round includes 6 projects, divided by 4 projects for the production of solar energy in the Ma’an Development Area in cooperation with Ma’an Development Company with a total capacity of 200 MW (50 MW for the project) and 100 MW for two projects in the field of wind energy in the southern regions of the Kingdom.
The total installed capacity of renewable energy projects (solar and wind power) is 732 MW by the end of 2017 (including projects to reduce consumption through net measurement and energy transit).
These projects currently produce more than 7 per cent of the total electricity consumed in the Kingdom, while the total contracted capacity in the Kingdom is about 1736 MW, and it is expected that the installed capacity of renewable sources in the Kingdom will reach more than 2400 MW in 2021, including reduction of consumption projects, which account for about 20 per cent of generating electricity.

The first round included 12 companies with a total capacity of 200 MW, most of them in the Ma’an Development Area. The second round projects for direct offers are four projects with 50 MW each in the Mafraq Development and Safawi-Blue areas.
