The Japanese index recorded the first annual loss since 2011

Japan’s Nikkei closed lower on its last trading session this year on Friday, as energy-related stocks plummeted, leading the index to its first annual loss in seven years.
The Nikkei <.N225> was down 0.31 percent at the end of the session to 20014.77.
The benchmark index posted a 12.1 percent loss in 2018, the first annual loss since 2011, ending the longest wave of gains since the late 1980s.
The broader Topix index <.TOPX> was down 0.50 percent at 1,494.09 points, down 17.8 percent year on year, the biggest since 2011.
Energy-linked stocks rallied on the broader market on Friday, after oil prices fell sharply on Thursday, on concerns over the stark supply of crude and the gloom of global growth prospects.
