At 13 billion euros… a wind farm agreement between Hitachi Energy and Petrofac

Hitachi Energy and Petrofac announced that they have been selected by TenneT, the Dutch-German transmission system operator, to supply several offshore and onshore high-voltage DC converter substations along with their associated power infrastructure in order to accelerate the transmission process. Integrating large quantities of renewable energies into European electricity networks.
The multi-year framework agreement was awarded to Hitachi Energy and Petrofac as part of TinyT’s ambitious “2GW offshore wind program” based on Hitachi Energy’s pioneering high-voltage (HVDC) technology. .
The agreement includes an initial commitment to deploy six standard systems for integrating renewable energy, five of which will connect offshore wind farms to the Dutch electricity grid, and the sixth system will connect these farms to the German electricity grid. Each of these interconnection systems has a capacity of 2 GW and a voltage level of 525 kV – a first for an offshore wind farm.

This important framework agreement is the largest ever for Hitachi Energy. It demonstrates the ability to develop innovative means to effectively deploy modern technology and shows how new business models can provide the capabilities needed to achieve the green energy transition. The framework agreement approach allows Hitachi Energy and Petrofac to plan ahead and increase their workforce and production capacity in a timely manner, as well as train employees in industry-needed skills, while also harnessing synergies between successive projects to meet service times.
AC converter
Hitachi Energy will supply its HVDC Light conversion stations, which convert alternating current into direct current and vice versa, for onshore and offshore conversion stations. Petrofac will undertake the engineering, procurement, construction and installation of offshore platforms and the provision of components for land transfer stations.
The first contract under the framework agreement was awarded with immediate effect for the Ijmuiden Ver Alpha project. The second contract for the Nederwiek project is expected to be awarded later this year. The framework agreement also includes the Doordewind 1, Doordewind 2, Nederwiek 3 and LanWin5 projects, for which contracts are expected to be awarded in a timeframe of 2024 to 2026.

Integrative solutions
Hitachi Energy and Petrofac began working together in June 2022 to provide network integration solutions and joint related infrastructure to support TinyT’s “2GW Program”.
In the same year, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark and Belgium agreed to produce at least 65 gigawatts of offshore wind capacity by 2030, the Eisberg Declaration states. With 40 GW, the transmission system operator TiniT will account for nearly two-thirds of this 65 GW capacity, with 20 GW each in the German and Dutch North Seas.
