The International Center for Synchrotron Light Science and Applications in the Middle East (SESAME) started the operation of the first solar power plant with a capacity of 6.5 MW and a total cost of 7 million Euros funded by the European Union.

The station is being operated on land adjacent to the headquarters of the Atomic Energy Commission in the capital Amman, making it the International Center for Synchrotron Light, which is hosted by Jordan in the Alan district of the world’s first renewable energy-powered Balqa Governorate.
The director general of the center, Dr. Khaled Toukan said in a press statement Tuesday that the project of solar power plant will reduce the burden of the electricity bill on the budget of the center, which is estimated cost of electricity consumption of about two million dinars annually, and the full needs of electric power, SESAME) is the world’s first scientific center that operates entirely on solar energy.
Dr. Touqan praised the cooperation of the Jordanian ministries, agencies and companies that contributed to the acceleration of the construction of this plant for the project.
The project was implemented and supervised by Jordanian companies, while the Jordanian Electricity Company connected the solar power plant to the electrical grid.
The EU is the second largest financier of the project after the Jordanian government. It has previously financed the manufacture of the magnets needed for the “Third Accelerator” storage ring for about 5 million euros.
