Maersk and Total stop their work in Iran

Media IN 17 \ 05 \ 2018
Denmark’s Maersk Tankers said on Thursday it would suspend its activities in Iran after the United States decided to withdraw from Iran’s nuclear deal and re-impose sanctions on Tehran.
The company said it would abide by the agreements, which came into effect before May 8, but would be concluded by November 4 “under US sanctions that have been re-imposed.”
France’s Total warned on Wednesday it might abandon a multi-billion-dollar gas project in Iran that failed to secure a US exemption from US sanctions, casting doubt on Europe-led efforts to salvage the nuclear deal.
Maersk and Total’s position shows how hard it is for European powers to protect their interests in Iran and offer guarantees to maintain the nuclear deal.
Earlier this week, France, Britain and Germany pledged to keep the nuclear deal alive by trying to keep the flow of Iranian oil and investments afloat, but acknowledged it would find it difficult to provide the safeguards demanded by Tehran.
