Verizon Unveils Ericsson Launch of Fifth Generation Technology

MediaIn 18 December 2017

Verizon has selected Ericsson (Nasdaq: ERIC) to provide the equipment for the networks to launch the fifth-generation technology commercially. Verizon will deploy the business radio network for the fifth generation technology and the fifth generation core network in selected markets in the second half of 2018.

The two companies are stepping up their leadership in the sector by accelerating the launch of the fifth-generation technology, with Verizon and Ericsson planning to turn the integrated mobile communications system into a fast-paced fifth-generation technology.

“The fifth-generation technology will change the way we work, our interaction with the world, the ways we learn and play different games,” said Ed Chan, senior vice president of Technology and Planning for Enterprise Networks and Technology at Verizon.

During the past year, Ericsson and Verizon conducted five-generation wireless trials using radio spectrum in many cities and neighborhoods in different geographical areas and high residential densities. This was a crucial step in Verizon’s plan to deploy the first wireless broadband network.

These experiments also contributed to the understanding of the fifth generation technologies and the spread of millimeter waves used in the 5th Generation Technical Forum and the third generation 3GPP project for the new 5G NR generation radio waves.
