The pharmaceutical industry in the country achieved a qualitative leap at the end of last year, as the number of pharmaceutical factories reached 24, with an increase of 100% compared to 2012.
The number of items produced by factories increased by almost the same rate, as the number of items reached 1715 items, including medicines for all chronic diseases and others, and the exports of some companies operating in the country to African and European countries reached about 90% of their products.
Dr. Amin Al-Amiri, Assistant Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health and Community Protection for Public Health Policy and Licensing, confirmed that the number of pharmaceutical factories in the country will reach 30 by 2030, stressing that the facilities provided by the state to investors of various nationalities, tax exemptions, and the distinguished and integrated infrastructure established by the state are comparable to the most powerful advanced countries.
Dr. Amin Al-Amiri affirmed the keenness of the Ministry of Health and Community Protection to provide various types of medicines to enable patients to access them easily and at prices that suit the various segments of society.
Pointing out that the number of locally manufactured medicines is 1,715, of which pharmaceutical products constitute the largest number of these medicines by 44%, followed by medical supplies by 27%, public sale products by 19%, biological medicines by 6%, while herbal products constitute 4% of medical products. Regarding the classification of pharmaceutical factories, Al Amiri explained: Factories include medicines and medical supplies, including 16 factories for the manufacture of innovative medicines and 8 factories for the manufacture of medical equipment and supplies.
Stressing that the Ministry is striving to support and develop the pharmaceutical sector in the country, relying on this to encourage cooperation between international companies and local factories, support innovation in research and drug studies, and increase diversity in locally manufactured items through the manufacture of vaccines and medicines.

There is a variety of locally manufactured medicines, including, for example, medicines for diabetes, heart diseases, pressure, arteries, antibiotics, medicines for digestive diseases, depression treatments, insulin, and many others. A Covid test device is also manufactured in the country, in addition to the manufacture of herbal medicines and a number of innovative medicines in partnership with international pharmaceutical companies, as the number of innovative products manufactured in the country exceeded 150 products.
The United Arab Emirates is considered the first country in the Middle East to have manufactured the “Covid-19” vaccine, and this is an achievement written for the country.
He added, locally manufactured medicines are distributed among traditional pharmaceutical products by 87%, public sale products by 9%, medical supplies by 2%, biological medicines and herbal products by 1% each, and the ministry is working to encourage factories to expand and manufacture pharmaceutical products.
