The Supervisory Committee for the Preparation of COP28 is discussing the agenda of the Presidency of the Conference

His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Chairman of the Supreme National Committee, to supervise the preparation work for the “COP28” session, affirmed that the UAE, as the host country for the conference, is determined to manage an innovative multilateral work system, in support of achieving a global consensus. This came during the seventh meeting of the committee, which witnessed a discussion of the ongoing preparations, in preparation for the conference, which will be hosted by the country from November 30 to December 12 at Expo Dubai.
The UAE is determined to manage an innovative multilateral work system
During the meeting, His Highness referred to climate change as the “primary challenge” of this stage, and said, “Given the harsh climatic nature of the UAE, and the transition process in the energy sector taking place in it, we understand the urgent need to take ambitious measures to mitigate the repercussions of climate change, and work To reach the path of maintaining the goal of not exceeding the global temperature rise at 1.5 degrees Celsius. We also recognize the need to support the growing number of communities hit by droughts, heat, floods, storms and other disasters and shocks caused by climate change. We also believe that investing in a low-emissions future can lead to sustainable economic growth and create the necessary job opportunities to achieve a just and practical transition in the energy sector.”
He added, “Our goal is for the COP28 conference to succeed in achieving progress and a radical transformation that limits the repercussions of climate change. The UAE’s agenda for the conference is characterized by ambition, focus on practicality and accountability, and moving from pledges to implementing concrete actions. We will also work with all stakeholders keen to play a constructive role, to contribute to finding solutions across the issues of mitigation, adaptation, loss and damage, and climate finance.”
His Highness stressed the need to ensure the application of a comprehensive approach in all logistical preparations, including providing a seamless experience for all delegates and visitors, and benefiting from the UAE’s status as a hub connecting 140 cities from all over the world. He also highlighted the importance of strengthening institutional mechanisms for meaningful youth participation in the United Nations climate process.
He also highlighted the diversity of the COP28 Bureau team, saying: “The COP28 team represents nearly 30 nationalities and comes from diverse age groups, ethnicities and professional backgrounds, including IGOs, NGOs, previous COP Presidencies and the government and private sectors. This combination of skills and experience will help ensure an inclusive and effective conference.”
As an international trade hub and global crossroads, the UAE is best placed to support negotiations in key focus areas such as energy, agriculture, investment and sustainable transport. The country’s leadership adopts this vision at the heart of its future outlook, based on the firm conviction that cooperation will play the most important role in ensuring the success of global efforts to reduce emissions.
While Dr. Sultan Al-Jaber, appointed president of the COP28 conference, vice-chairman of the committee, confirmed that the conference will be inclusive and accessible to all. With the importance of solidarity, cooperation and concerted efforts. And that he will go on an overseas tour to listen to the priorities of the various stakeholders, with the aim of enhancing consultation and activating a wide range of stakeholders.
He said, “The UAE presidency of the COP28 conference is committed to managing an open, transparent and inclusive process, to build on and accelerate the progress made in previous conferences. We will focus on listening to diverse points of view to ensure the success of the conference in achieving its objectives. As an important aspect of the consultative process, we will start by listening to all stakeholders from governments, civil society organizations, businesses, youth and others. This will help us chart a path forward to COP28 and beyond, to the satisfaction of all concerned.”
The Supreme National Committee includes in its membership ministers and government officials who represent the concerted efforts of the government and the various sectors and fields and their integration at all levels, to ensure the ideal preparation for hosting the conference.
On January 12, His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Presidential Court, announced the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the State, may God protect him, to assign the leadership team of the conference, where Dr. The task of the appointed president of the conference, Shamma Al Mazrouei, Minister of Community Development, the task of “climate pioneer for youth”, and Razan Al Mubarak, the task of “climate pioneer”.
