Dubai Ports World (DP World), the global catalyst for smart trade, and the industrial engineering group SMS, have announced the launch of Box Bay on their joint project aimed at changing container handling in ports.
Box-Bay is a new and intelligent container storage system that will be ready in time to support Expo 2020 Dubai. The initial project will be launched at Container Terminal No. 4 at Jebel Ali Port in Dubai. For the first time, the Xbox Box technology will be presented to the public at the TEC Europe conference scheduled to be held in Rotterdam in June.
DP World announced the establishment of a joint venture with the SMS Group, an industrial engineering company, to develop the high-volume storage system (HPS) for the purpose of handling the 50-ton metal coil in racks up to 50 meters all the time.
The patented design and floor structure offers unique features with the ability to store containers up to 11 floors, which will help ensure a complete card for a conventional container terminal but one-third of the required floor space. As a result of the full automation of the system, it will be able to access each container, eliminating the need for container rearrangement. In addition, the system will achieve significant gains in handling speed, energy efficiency and safety as well as a significant reduction in operating costs.
The joint venture brings years of experience in the logistics of container terminals to both DP World and Amofa, a subsidiary of the SMS Group, which has developed the new system and the first of its kind to transport this installed technology to the ports sector .
