Emirates Astronomy: Sunset coincides with the direction of Qibla until February 26

Sharjah on February 17 / The Emirates Astronomical Society said that the location of the sunset these days in the Emirates – between 16-26 February – coincides with the direction of the qiblah in Makkah Al-Mukarramah, and thus the direction of the qiblah can be determined accurately by observing the direction of sunset these days.

Ibrahim Jarwan, head of the association, said, “The location of the sunset at the moment of sunset coincides with the direction of the qiblah of the honorable Kaaba in Makkah Al-Mukarramah for the cities of the Emirates during the second half of February and October of each year, as the sun sets in the Emirates in general between 243 degrees on December 22 in winter, so it tends towards the southwest and between 297 degrees on June 21 in the summer, so it tends to the northwest, but in the two equinoxes “spring March 21 and autumn September 23”, its sunset will be exactly 270 degrees to the west.

He pointed out that on certain days of the year the location of the sunset coincides with the direction of the qiblah in Makkah Al-Mukarramah “between 260-256 degrees” throughout the Emirates “except for the extreme southern and western regions” on two dates annually, the first in the second half of February, specifically between February 16-26 and the second. In October, specifically between October 18-28, and thus the direction of the qiblah can be accurately determined by observing the direction of sunset on those days.
