“The marine environment has always been the main nerve of the UAE economy,” said Thani bin Ahmed al-Zaidi, minister of climate change and the environment. He pointed out that the blue economy contributes to the production of the local state by 68 percent.
In a statement to the Emirates News Agency (WAM) on the sidelines of the sixth session of the World Summit on the Oceans, which was launched this morning under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and supported by Environment Agency Abu Dhabi and the Department of Economic Development Abu Dhabi.
He pointed out that the Ministry of Climate Change and the Environment is working with all its partners from local, private, academic and public sectors to promote environmental work at the state level. In addition to working to introduce the world to the UAE experience and at the same time coordinate among the influential players in the world on the subject of cleaning the seas and cleaning the rivers of exotic materials and It is one of the biggest polluters of the seas and oceans.
Al-Zuwaidi noted that there are many challenges facing the state and the world in general. The most important challenges are the consequences of climate change and the increase of acidity and high temperatures that affect all countries of the world, which directly cause degradation of coral reefs and habitats where marine diversity lives. The world passes through our seas and this leads to pollution of water, in addition to that 80 percent of the shipment of oil passes through our seas as well.
He pointed out that there are practices that are controlled by the efforts of the concerned authorities, including the Land and Maritime Transport Authority and the port authorities as well as the local authorities. All maritime transport companies must comply with international laws and follow them in order to reduce pollution in water. And non-compliance with the laws and cause any damage to the UAE marine environment will be applied to all domestic and international legislation and laws.
