Emirates International Aluminum Company today announced the launch of the Taweelah Alumina Refinery, one of the strategic development projects that enhances the capacity of the UAE aluminum industry in the field of refining.
The refinery is worth US $ 3.3 billion and is located in the Khalifa Industrial City of Abu Dhabi (KIZAD) and is the first Alumina refinery in the UAE to launch the new Alumina industry as a new industrial activity in the UAE.
Alumina is the primary material for aluminum smelters and is extracted from bauxite ore. At full capacity, Al Tawina refinery is expected to produce about 2 million tons of alumina annually, replacing some imports and supplying Emirates International Aluminum Company with this raw material. The UAE currently imports all the quantities of alumina it needs from abroad.
Abdulla Jassim Bin Kalban, Managing Director and CEO of Emirates International Aluminum Company, said the launch of Al Taweelah Refinery for Alumina is an important milestone in the country’s industrial development and is one of the most important stages of the company’s strategic growth this year. The two projects will provide the company with raw materials that we need at competitive prices and will contribute to furthering the UAE’s aluminum activities for decades to come.
The construction of the Alumina longitudinal refinery took 72 million hours – equivalent to one person for more than 25,000 years – and the workforce at the height of construction was 11,542.
About 280 safety specialists managed on-site operations and safety systems. The total recordable accident rate during the construction of the Alumina Long Term Refinery was less than 10 percent compared with its counterparts in the US heavy industrial construction sector in 2017, according to figures published by the US For labor statistics … while no deaths were recorded.
