Solomon Islands: We will not allow a Chinese military presence on our soil

The Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands, Manasseh Sogavari, said on Friday that he assured Australia that his country would not allow a Chinese military presence on its soil.
This South Pacific archipelago is at the center of a diplomatic confrontation between the United States, Australia and their allies on the one hand, and China, which is trying to consolidate its influence there on the other.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Sogavari met in Canberra on Thursday in a bid to ease tension raised by the signing of a security pact between the Pacific nation and Beijing six months ago. The agreement raised fears in the West, who fear it could pave the way for a Chinese military presence in the region.
“Regarding China, it is a sensitive issue that we discussed and I assured Australia in my interview with Anthony Albanese that we would not allow such a thing to happen,” Sogavary said.
