Rare storm hits Alaska

The US Meteorological Service reported that a rare storm of strength, hitting western Alaska, caused huge waves and floods that swept away homes, according to what was published by the “Russia Today” website.

“Remains of Hurricane Merbock to hit western Alaska… over the weekend, with strong waves, hurricane-force winds,” the meteorologist wrote on Twitter, adding that “floods will increase” in intensity.

“This is without a doubt the strongest storm we’ve seen in early fall in the Bering Sea in the last 50 years,” University of Alaska climate expert Rick Thoman told AFP.

In the coastal village of Golovin, “the school is surrounded by water, the houses are overflowing, and at least two are floating,” municipal services in Fairbanks, Alaska’s second-largest city, said.
