Sixteen people, including the Ukrainian Minister of Interior and two children, were killed when a helicopter crashed near a kindergarten on Wednesday morning in the Kyiv region, according to Ukrainian police.

“We have information about 16 dead, including two children,” the police said in a statement.

The ministry confirmed the killing of Interior Minister Denis Monastyrsky (42 years), his first assistant Yevgeny Yeni (42 years) and another senior official, in addition to 13 others, who were on board the helicopter.

The police indicated that 22 wounded people, including ten children, were admitted to the hospital.

Brovary, home to about 100,000 people, is located about 20 kilometers northeast of Kyiv.

“At the time of the tragedy, there were children and employees in the kindergarten,” said the governor of the Kyiv region, Oleksiy Kuleba, on Telegram.

Footage circulating on social media showed a huge fire breaking out after the helicopter crashed.

No information has been revealed about the cause of the tragedy until now.

A spokesman for the Ukrainian Air Force indicated that the helicopter that crashed belonged to the State Emergency Situations Service of the Ministry of Interior.
