MediaIn – Abu Dhabi January 27, 2018 and Am

Sultan bin Saeed Al Mansouri, Minister of Economy and Chairman of the Higher Committee for Consumer Protection, revealed that the first days of implementing the value added tax have witnessed high rates of complaints received by the consumer protection contact centers in the Ministry of Economy and Economic Services, but he described the emergence of some observations and challenges at the beginning of applying the tax system as natural and predictable.

He said that the total number of incoming calls on the first day reached 3261 calls, the second day 2110 calls, and 2049 calls on the third day, but these rates have decreased over time, reaching a rate of 493 calls on January 15, 2018 which ends the first two weeks of applying the tax.

This came during a meeting of the Higher Committee for Consumer Protection at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Dubai to discuss the impact of the application of value added tax in the country’s markets since the beginning of this year. The meeting discussed the procedures of follow-up markets after the application of the tax with monitoring and classification of the complaints received and identified under three main categories, complaints of high prices, complaints about the tax number, whether or not there is a number on the invoice, and complaints about an error in calculating the tax rate of 5% on the price of the item.
