The Department of Municipalities and Transport revealed the results of the initiatives and programs for increasing the green area and tree planting operations in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

The department indicated that the Emirate of Abu Dhabi embraces nearly 5 million trees of various types within the limits of urban growth in the emirate, which constitute 2.7 trees per capita, covering 7% of the city of Abu Dhabi, 15% of the city of Al Ain, and 30% of the Al Dhafra region, as part of government efforts to increase the size of trees. The department affirmed its adoption of the best international standards in applying the concept of “Urban Growth Limits”, or what is known as UGB, which represents an integrated program in the gradual expansion of cities, demarcation of boundaries between them and forests, reserves and rural areas, and their periodic reassessment.

The strategy of the department and its affiliates includes identifying groups or individuals who are directly affected and inviting them to participate in the process of developing urban spaces, determining future development patterns and the expected population growth, in order to protect environmental resources or historical sites and agricultural lands, in addition to setting special regulations, policies and guidelines.
