Abu Dhabi Economy receives 352 complaints on VAT

The Department of Economic Development – Abu Dhabi (ADED) has revealed 720 field inspections in the emirate’s areas of Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Dhafra since the introduction of Value Added Tax (VAT) in early January to ensure that the sales outlets are properly taxed and not overpriced. Ahmed Tarash al-Qubaisi, director of the department of commercial protection in the department said that inspectors are tasked to raise awareness and alert outlets of the importance of the obligation to apply the tax limits set by the law to increase prices by only 5%.
He added that these visits come within the framework of an integrated plan set by the Department in order to enhance its role in the proper application of value added tax, as it ensured, in addition to field visits on a daily basis, the implementation of many of the inspection campaigns on outlets that consumers complain about.
He pointed out that the department received 352 complaints, 182 of which were distributed in 115 complaints in Abu Dhabi, 62 in Al Ain and 5 in Al Dhafra. 170 complaints were not answered.
Al Qubaisi affirmed that the Department of Economic Development Abu Dhabi will continue to carry out field inspection visits, inspection campaigns and respond quickly to any complaints received by consumers, warning at the same time outlets of the consequences of using the application of VAT to affect consumers by raising prices excessively.
