Emirates Aluminum: Al-Alumina refinery’s pilot operations are completed

Emirates Aluminum International today announced the completion of the pilot operations of the Al-Taklis division, the first major section of the Alumina refinery currently under construction in Taweelah, Khalifa Industrial City, Kizad, Abu Dhabi. The first batch of Alumina from Taweelah refinery is expected to be produced during the first half From 2019.
The completion of the pilot phase of the calcification department is a major step in the process of testing the readiness of all four main equipment and divisions at Al Taweelah Refinery. This phase is part of Emirates International Aluminum’s preparations to start production at Al Taweelah Refinery for Alumina Refinery in the first half of next year.
The Alumina Refinery includes 9,500 units, 22 tanks, a number of pipes sufficient to connect Abu Dhabi with Muscat and a number of cables extending from Abu Dhabi to Cairo. It should be noted that the operation of the entire station requires the completion of some of the procedures separately, amounting to 82,500 procedures. The calcination section alone contains more than 1,700 equipment and 100 engines.
Abdulla Jassim Bin Kalban, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Aluminum International, said: “The arrival of the pilot phase is a milestone in our development of this huge project. This achievement highlights efforts to keep pace with plans to establish the first Alumina refinery In the UAE and the second in the Middle East, which will support the strategic direction of the Emirates International Aluminum Company to expand its business flow within the value chain of the aluminum industry and create new sources of income and secure natural resources at competitive prices.
The calcification process is the final phase of Bayer’s method of bauxite purification and is used to refine bauxite ore to alumina. This process removes the remaining water from the alumina crystals and the temperatures in the calcination kilns can reach 1,000 degrees Celsius.
