The benchmark Nikkei <.N225> was down 1.5% to its lowest level in five weeks on Tuesday as concerns over the possible collapse of US-China trade talks continue to push the market as the strong yen pushed export stocks down.
Nikkei lost 321.13 points to close at 21,602.59, the lowest close since April after falling 1.5 percent as investors returned from a 10-day holiday.
The broader Topix index was down 1.7 percent at 1,572.33 points, and all the 33 sub-sectors fell.
