Tomorrow, Sunday, in the Sultanate of Oman, elections for members of municipal councils will begin for the third term, with the participation of 731,767 voters who will vote through the electronic application “Election” to choose 126 representatives for them from among 727 candidates, including 27 women.
His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, Sultan of Oman, had stressed, during his meeting with the sheikhs and notables of the governorates of the Sultanate, the activation of the roles of the governorates, investing their own resources and benefiting from their components.
For its part, the Omani Ministry of Interior announced earlier the readiness of all committees operating in the municipal council elections for the third term, and full readiness for the electoral process on the voting day, which was set on December 25 for voters inside the Sultanate of Oman.
The Ministry confirmed that the “Vet” application dedicated to the voting process was designed according to security standards, taking all precautions for the election in full confidentiality, and the application available on smart phone stores can be downloaded.
The municipal councils, especially in their third term (2023/2026), are formed according to their tasks and duties, in line with the provincial system, decentralization, and the local administration of the provinces, in order to achieve the goals of Oman Vision 2040.
The municipal council, during its term of four years in each governorate, consists of the presidency of the governor, the membership of members appointed by their job descriptions, and elected members representing the states affiliated to the governorate, with two members from each state and two people with competence and opinion from the people of the governorate, provided that they are not employees in one of the units of the apparatus. state administration.
Municipal councils, in accordance with Article 21 of the municipal council system in the Sultanate of Oman, are concerned with expressing opinions on development plans projects within the scope of the governorate, development projects therein, the performance of service government units branches, proposed sites for development, service, and economic projects, urban plans and the governorate’s needs of public utilities. government services and related projects.
The functions of the municipal councils include making recommendations related to public health, proposing regulations of health requirements for activities related to public health, and participating with the competent authorities in determining the public benefit in the field of development projects, structural and public urban plans, and special plans in residential, commercial, industrial and tourist areas in the governorate, and holding cultural festivals. and recreational and tourism projects, and follow up on the implementation of service and development projects, and make observations on them.
The municipal councils are also responsible for approving programs to help eligible groups, caring for orphans and people of determination in coordination with the concerned authorities, proposing programs to help those affected by natural disasters and climatic conditions, in coordination with the competent authorities, and projects related to the development of tourist destinations in the governorate.
The councils play a social role represented in studying social issues in the governorate, proposing appropriate solutions to them in cooperation with the competent authorities, and working to educate the local community on the importance of preserving natural reserves and wildlife.
