The information and communications sector in the UAE has witnessed significant developments over the past years and its participation in non-oil GDP increased at constant prices to AED 40.7 billion in 2017, a growth of 3.9% compared to the previous year. According to official statistics, the sector’s contribution to non-oil GDP reached 4.1% by the end of 2017 compared to 4% in 2016. The growing growth in the sector is seen as an enhanced indicator of the country’s policy of diversifying the economic base, according to several international think tanks specialized in studying developments in the economies of countries around the world. In the past years, the UAE has sought to strengthen the work of the ICT sector by adopting the best international policies and practices in this field, both at the level of the infrastructure and the legislation governing the work of the sector. The sector’s participation in non-oil GDP increased at constant prices from 33 billion dirhams in 2013 to 35.1 billion dirhams in 2014, an increase of 6.3 percent. In 2015, the sector’s participation in GDP increased from AED 36.8 billion to AED 39.3 billion at the end of 2016 and to AED 40.7 billion in 2017.
