An Arab committee is considering setting up a legislative framework for the Convention on Technical Restrictions on Trade

The Committee on Technical Restrictions on Trade in the framework of the Greater Arab Free Trade Area held its first meeting today at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States under the chairmanship of the Sultanate of Oman and the participation of representatives of Arab countries to develop a legislative framework that addresses the non-tariff technical restrictions that negatively affect inter-Arab or international trade.
The Committee discussed the terms of reference for its work and developed a plan of action for the drafting of the special legal annex to the Agreement on Technical Trade Restrictions in the framework of the Greater Arab Free Trade Area.
Dr. Bahjat Abul-Nasr, Director of the Department of Economic Integration at the League of Arab States, said that the Secretariat conducted a survey which concluded that the issue of sanitary and phytosanitary measures and non-tariff technical restrictions are the main obstacles to trade movement and have a negative impact on intra-Arab trade and international trade Pointing out that the formation of the committee comes to develop a legislative framework of the technical restrictions on trade, which is an annex to the executive program of the Greater Arab Free Trade Area.
