Dubai Airports has announced plans to close the 45-day runway of Dubai International Airport from 16 April to 30 May 2019 for a comprehensive upgrade designed to raise safety, service and capacity.

Dubai International Airport operates throughout the day and handles more than 1,100 aircraft movements per day including mostly wide-bodied two-lane aircraft. While scheduled maintenance is scheduled on a weekly basis, wider upgrades require a complete closure of the runway.

The southern runway of the Dubai International Airport (12R-30L), which is dedicated to the end of its design life, needs to be reconfigured and replaced with ground lighting for the airport field and supporting infrastructure. . While the northern runway of Dubai International Airport was subjected to a similar program in 2014 with the aim of upgrading and developing it.

The renovation of the southern runway will include the laying of 60,000 tons of asphalt and 8,000 cubic meters of cement to reinforce and reconcile the surface of the runway and its adjacent corridors. Dubai Airports will use this opportunity to install 800 km of main cables and replace over 5,500 light bulbs with modern technological alternatives Economical and environmentally friendly.

The upgrade is scheduled to take place from April 16 to May 30, 2019 when passenger traffic decreases due to the seasonal lull in order to reduce the impact on the service. During the closing period, airlines will be required to reduce their operations to Dubai International Airport due to a significant drop in capacity resulting from the availability of only one runway for operations. Dubai Airports has provided advance notice to all airlines to plan for the reduction of flights and plan for the new timetable.
