The National Commission for Tourism and National Heritage said that the number of domestic and foreign tourism trips during the year 2016 amounted to 257 million trips with an expenditure of 152.4 billion riyals, 45 million domestic trips with an expenditure of 55.4 billion riyals and 21 million foreign trips. In terms of shopping and entertainment, the list of destinations for local tourists topped the list with 19.1 million trips, 42.4 per cent, followed by visits by friends and relatives at 11.8 million, representing 26.2 per cent, and religious trips, which totaled 11.8 million, Of the total, pointing out that the domestic tourism expenditure of SAR 55.4 billion in 2016 increased by 15.5 percent over the previous year with an average expenditure of 235 riyals per tourist per night.
The regions of Makkah and Madinah came at the top of the list of the most visited areas followed by Asir region, Riyadh and then the eastern region respectively. Together, these regions account for 84.4% of the total domestic tourism traffic in the Kingdom for 2016.
