Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (SEWA) is considering the construction of 3 new desalination plants with reverse osmosis capacity of 40 million gallons.
Eng. Essam Amin Al Mulla, Director of Water Management at Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority, told the Emirates News Agency on the sidelines of the Conference on Water Desalination Projects in the Middle East and North Africa, which started today in Abu Dhabi and continues for two days. The low cost of producing solar energy has created new opportunities for the growth and development of desalination Compared to the conventional energy price. He explained that the cost of producing a cubic meter of desalinated water is 50 cents using the latest technologies based on clean energy according to the latest pricing to expand the Taweelah station to Abu Dhabi.
Al Mulla added that Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (SEWA) is seeking to develop infrastructure projects for the electricity and water sector to meet the expected demand in the future according to the latest technology and high efficiency.
Al-Mulla also expressed his cooperation with the University of Sharjah to launch the Bachelor’s program in Water and Desalination Engineering next year, which is the first of its kind in the Middle East, serving all areas of water desalination and energy through the rehabilitation of national cadres capable of managing the sector efficiently and in accordance with the highest international standards .
He said that the Emirate’s total production of desalinated water reaches 115 million gallons per day, of which 50 million gallons are produced by thermal energy. He pointed out that Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority has a strategic plan to replace 4 substations / Which will save more than 60% of the cost of producing desalinated water compared to conventional energy.
Al Mulla noted that the Middle East and North Africa Water Desalination Projects Conference addresses the most important challenges facing the water and energy sector and utilizes modern technologies to increase the efficiency and capacity of existing plants using new technologies based on clean energy.
