Standard (Saudi CAFE) to improve fuel consumption in vehicles 55% to 2025

MediaIn / Riyadh February 28, 2018
The Saudi Center for Energy Efficiency, in cooperation with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the Saudi Organization for Standardization, Metrology and Quality and the General Customs Authority, has launched the Saudi Standard for the Fuel Economy in New Vehicles (CAFE).
The Saudi CAFE aims to determine fuel economy performance requirements for all light vehicles – small cars and light trucks – added to the vehicle fleet in Saudi Arabia, including imported and locally produced vehicles for sale in the Kingdom. Part of an integrated approach to improving energy efficiency in the transport sector in Saudi Arabia.

These efforts culminated in the signing of memoranda of understanding (MoU) three years ago with a large number of light vehicle manufacturers, under which Saudi companies adhere to the Saudi CAFE standard, the first of its kind to be launched in the Middle East and the Arab region.
The program’s specialists set an ambitious goal to improve the fuel economy in Saudi Arabia by up to 4% per year to 55% of the total fuel consumption in the land transport sector by 2025, making the Kingdom describe the thresholds of developed countries that have similar standards.

The importance of the Standard is that the transport sector is the second largest consumer of energy in Saudi Arabia, and is expected to grow its consumption in the foreseeable future. Moreover, the number of light vehicles added over the next 15 years is expected to exceed the current stock of Road vehicles. For this reason, addressing the energy efficiency of this category of vehicles is very important for the Kingdom, which has necessitated the development of the fuel economy standard to achieve this goal.
The standard also ensures the adoption of technology neutrality, equal competition and gradual gradient objectives, taking into account the diversity of consumer demand and the supply of car manufacturers. The fuel economy targets for new light vehicles are also based on the concept of average companies and the quality of vehicle use to maintain market diversity And its ability to meet the different needs of consumers ..
Saudi Arabia’s sole interest in setting fuel economy standards is to reduce the growth of domestic demand for various types of fuel used in the transport sector without compromising consumer requirements. Therefore, an application mechanism has been adopted to ensure that all car manufacturers achieve long-term target values for the fuel economy.
