The UAE calls for reformulating Arab economic policies to conform to global trends towards the new economy

His Excellency Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy, headed the country’s delegation participating in the 112th session of the Council

The Arab Economic and Social Conference was held at the ministerial level, which was held at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States in Cairo today.

The meeting discussed mechanisms for enhancing Arab cooperation in various economic and social fields.

His Excellency Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri said: “We renew our full commitment to advancing the process of joint Arab action and developing it in a way that meets the development aspirations of the Arab peoples, in implementation of the directives of the wise leadership of the UAE, regarding the necessity of developing joint Arab action mechanisms that achieve sustainable well-being and prosperity for current and future generations.”

His Excellency added: “The technological revolution that we are witnessing now holds tremendous opportunities for Arab economies to grow and prosper, and we must reformulate our economic policies and programs to be compatible with global trends towards new economic sectors that have become the main driver of the global economy, in addition to making more room for emerging companies.” And the private sector to participate in leading this transformation as partners in the development process.”

He stressed that there is an urgent need to adopt unified, flexible and diversified Arab economic policies, and to complete the activation of existing Arab initiatives represented in establishing a unified customs union and the Greater Arab Free Trade Area, in light of the geopolitical changes that the world is witnessing. He said: “We look forward to adopting more effective mechanisms that contribute to Enhancing the movement of non-oil trade between Arab countries, and ensuring the flow of goods and goods between them without customs complications, in a way that supports the sustainable growth of Arab economies.”

His Excellency stressed that empowering Arab women and giving them a greater role in decision-making is a very important issue that requires developing policies aimed at strengthening their position in leadership positions as an essential element in building the renaissance of nations, noting that the UAE has come a long way in the field of empowering women in various fields of work. In light of the support of the wise leadership, stemming from a true belief in the importance of its role as a major partner in the development of society and a pillar of comprehensive and sustainable growth.

In this context, His Excellency reviewed the initiative of the United Arab Emirates regarding the “Center for Arab Practices for Gender Balance” through the signing of a cooperation agreement between the Emirates Center for Gender Balance and the University, explaining that this initiative is expected to contribute to providing a better understanding of the efforts of Arab countries in It relates to empowering women and enhancing their economic and societal contributions, in order to support the position of Arab countries in international competitiveness indicators related to gender equality.

His Excellency expressed his aspiration for strong Arab participation in the international economic conferences and forums that the UAE will host during the coming period, which will contribute to supporting common Arab economic interests, including the Eighth World Investment Forum, affiliated with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), which will be held in September. October, under the slogan “Investing in Sustainable Development,” and the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), scheduled to be held in November, in addition to the Thirteenth Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization, which will be held in the capital, Abu Dhabi, in February 2024.

Ibn Touq appreciated the pivotal role played by the Arab Economic and Social Council in developing legislation and programs supporting the Arab development process, in a way that ensures achieving the highest levels of prosperity for the Arab peoples, stressing at the same time the support of the United Arab Emirates for all the outcomes of the current meeting, which contributes to improving relations between countries. Arab League towards more momentum levels of fruitful partnership.

The agenda of the Council’s discussions included discussing developments in Arab cooperation and developments in the Arab Customs Union, in addition to the unified Arab speech for the joint annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank for the year 2023, mechanisms to support the Palestinian economy, and the Arab food security report for the year 2021. The Council also discussed ways to enhance Arab cooperation in the fields of Social and developmental issues, the digital education initiative in the Syrian Arab Republic, and special arrangements to prepare for the fifth session of the Arab Economic and Social Development Summit, scheduled to be held in the Mauritanian capital, Nouakchott, next November.
