The Emirates Arkan Steel Group has succeeded in establishing its position at the forefront of the sustainability revolution taking place in the steel industry, thanks to its tireless efforts to reduce carbon emissions and lead the transition towards a greener future, and within the framework of its endeavor to reduce these emissions by 40%, by 2030, To reach net zero emissions by 2050, the group has embarked on the mission of transforming its operational operations and establishing new standards for environmental preservation by adopting advanced technologies and enhancing cooperation with its partners to achieve its ambitious goals of decarbonization.

 

Being the largest iron and building materials production company in the Emirates, and one of the signatories to the Climate Responsible Companies Pledge, the “Emirates Steel Arkan” group actively seeks to reduce its environmental impact, in line with the UAE’s goals, to build a greener future, as part of the strategic initiative to achieve climate neutrality. , by 2050.

 

 

 

Green future

 

The group is working on developing a low-carbon iron production complex that combines advanced technologies and low-emission operational processes as well, as part of its endeavors to lead efforts to transform the steel industry into a more sustainable future. The group is looking forward, in partnership with the Japanese company “Itoshu Corporation”, and in cooperation with Abu Dhabi Ports. And, with the facilitation of the Department of Economic Development in the emirate, to establish an integrated complex for iron production in Abu Dhabi, which will play a fundamental role in the global supply chain of low-carbon iron products.

 

The group also cooperates with the Norwegian company DNV to implement various initiatives, such as decarbonization of the steel industry, environmental, social and corporate governance practices, and energy transition. This partnership reflects the group’s commitment to leading the sector’s efforts towards achieving climate neutrality, and promoting sustainable practices, in line with the strategic initiative, to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 in the country.

 

 

 

 

The group developed a detailed road map for decarbonization, based on capturing and capturing carbon emissions, green hydrogen, clean energy, using scrap, and enhancing energy efficiency. It uses 45% less carbon in its production processes than its competitors. In 2022, it succeeded in reducing energy intensity by 23%, carbon emissions intensity across steel production units by 35%, and emissions intensity by 19%, by using 80% of clean electricity sources, carbon capture and iron scrap.

 

During the current year, the group implemented many initiatives to enhance energy efficiency, which resulted in a 13% reduction in energy consumption. It also cooperates with various parties to consolidate its position in the field of using green hydrogen in various business units, as it works closely with industry leaders to study the availability of hydrogen at affordable prices. Competitiveness and better investment, with a view to achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

 

In addition to its commitment to leading decarbonization efforts in the sector, the group actively seeks to support reforestation projects, and also invests in natural solutions to offset any remaining carbon emissions, ensuring a comprehensive approach to protecting the environment.

 

Operations technology

 

The group is keen to support innovation through its various products and enhance its position in the field of sustainability, and through its innovative low-carbon rebar product ES600, it seeks to reduce the consumption of the amounts of iron used in construction projects, by a rate ranging between 18% and 24%, according to the size of the project. In the first quarter of 2023, it was able to successfully market this product, as it was used to build the foundations of two residential towers in Dubai. The group also continues to expand its product range, by adding products with higher added value while improving profit margins. It adopts advanced technologies, low-emission processes, and carbon capture and capture technology. To ensure adherence to the highest standards and best practices, it has adopted a comprehensive monitoring system that closely monitors production processes and emissions, and cooperates. With suppliers and partners to support their sustainable practices and reduce their carbon emissions.

 

Empowering youth

 

The group’s commitment to sustainability is not limited to its operational efforts, but also includes supporting the efforts of Emirati youth to contribute to building a low-carbon economy, as it aims, through its programs dedicated to developing talent, to inspire the next generation of leaders to adopt sustainable practices and stimulate change.

 

The group’s Youth Council recently hosted its first session of the “Youth Forum in Industry and Technology,” which aims to strengthen relations between companies and institutions that harness technology in order to develop the knowledge-based economy in the Emirates and provide advanced solutions to confront pressing environmental challenges.

 

The road to “COP 28”

 

In May, the group hosted the 10th National Climate Ambition Dialogue, organized by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment under the slogan “Accelerating the transition to green, low-carbon industry.” In its tenth edition, it targeted the industrial sector and enhanced its participation in reducing carbon emissions in the Emirates, ahead of hosting the meetings of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) this year. The group’s participation and hosting of this event comes as part of its efforts to support the pledge of major industrial companies in the Emirates to reduce their carbon emissions, with the aim of confronting climate change and creating a more sustainable future for future generations.
