Dubai maintained its international leadership within the list of the five best countries in the world in the “International Shipping Centers Development Index” (ISCD) for the year 2023, in which Dubai ranked first in the global centers for sea freight and logistics services at the level of Arab cities, according to the report recently issued by the “ISCD” organization. Reports issued by the organization revealed that Dubai ranked fifth among the 20 most powerful international centers for commercial maritime shipping for the fourth year in a row, according to this year’s “International Shipping Center Development Index” report, uniquely positioning itself as the only Arab maritime city on the list and ahead of Rotterdam, Hamburg, and Athens-Piraeus. , Ningbo-Zhoushan, then New York-New Jersey. The report also indicated that Singapore, London, Shanghai, and Hong Kong were chosen among the top four centers for global shipping in 2023.

His Excellency explained that more than 80% of the total volume of global trade falls on international maritime freight traffic. This demonstrates the vital importance of this sector within the country and its role in driving the economic wheel, pointing out the efforts of the Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation, represented by the Dubai Maritime Authority, to make every effort to ensure that Dubai continues to be among the best leading maritime cities in the world.

Enhancing maritime competitiveness

For his part, Sheikh Dr. Saeed bin Ahmed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, Executive Director of the Dubai Maritime Authority, stressed that Dubai’s pioneering achievement within the International Shipping Centers Development Index strengthens Dubai’s position as a strong maritime competitor on the global maritime map, saying: “Dubai’s maintenance of Its leadership position on the international list for four consecutive years is due to its steady and confident progress to enhance the competitiveness, efficiency and effectiveness of the maritime sector through the (Freedom Sector Strategy), which was launched and implemented by the Authority in an effort to consolidate Dubai’s position as a first-class global maritime centre.”

He added: “Looking forward to a more prosperous future, the Dubai Maritime Authority seeks to enhance fruitful cooperation with concerned parties in a way that contributes to the growth and development of the maritime sector in the emirate, in addition to working on a series of plans and initiatives that contribute to promoting sustainable shipping and the sustainable development of maritime navigation, as it comes to “The International Maritime Organization’s top priority for the coming years.”

Sheikh Saeed bin Ahmed also stressed that Dubai’s presence in the lead position as the only Arab city on the list that includes 20 international maritime shipping centers is the best evidence of the emirate’s keenness to continue the growth process with its growing pivotal role on the global maritime map to reach the ranks of the most important maritime capitals. The international report issued by the International Shipping Center Development Index relies on evaluating and measuring three basic indicators and 16 sub-indicators to evaluate the comprehensive performance of 43 cities around the world that provide port and shipping businesses from the perspective of port infrastructure, shipping services and the general environment.
