The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi launches the Ghars Al-Emarat initiative

Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in the Al Dhafra Region, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, the Authority launched the “Planting the Emirates” initiative to plant mangrove trees for visitors to the COP28 Conference of the Parties.

This comes within the framework of the climate change strategy of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, the Al Qurm – Abu Dhabi Initiative, and the UAE’s hosting of the twenty-eighth session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), which will be held during the period from November 30 to December 12 of this year in Expo City. Dubai.

Through the initiative, which coincides with the Year of Sustainability, mangrove trees will be planted using innovative methods, such as farming using drones, and approximately 10 mangrove trees will be planted for each visitor participating in the conference.

Mangroves will also be planted during the last quarter of this year, which is considered the appropriate period for planting this species, within coastal areas that are considered suitable environments for planting mangroves, such as the Marawah Marine Biosphere Reserve, the port city, and Jubail Island.

This initiative also supports the goals of the Al Qurm – Abu Dhabi Initiative, which was launched in February 2022, during the meeting that brought together His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Executive Council of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, and His Royal Highness Prince William, Crown Prince of the United Kingdom and Prince of Wales, in Jubail Mangrove Park in Abu Dhabi, to provide a platform for developing innovative solutions for planting mangroves, contributing to mitigating the effects of climate change, raising awareness of their importance and the need to restore them, and enhancing the emirate’s position as a leading global center for research and innovation in the field of mangrove conservation.

Her Excellency Dr. Sheikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary-General of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, said: This initiative aims to support Goal 13 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals related to “Climate Action,” which calls for urgent action to address climate change and adapt to its effects. It also supports national initiatives, including the initiative. The strategy for climate neutrality 2050, which is in line with the UAE’s goal of planting 100 million mangrove trees by 2030.

She pointed out that this initiative also contributes to highlighting the country’s commitment to achieving climate neutrality and promoting nature-based solutions to reduce the effects of climate change and reduce the environmental footprint of conference visitors, at a rate of absorbing one ton of carbon for every 5,000 mangrove trees.

For her part, Her Excellency Razan Al Mubarak, the United Nations Climate Change Leader, told the COP28 conference: “Building a resilient and climate-neutral future depends on stopping the degradation of nature and restoring natural ecosystems, and nature-based solutions, including solutions that include mangroves, would save more than a third of Needs to mitigate the effects of climate change and enhance the flexibility necessary to confront it.”
