September 23: The end of summer and a general drop in temperatures

September 2

Temperatures begin to gradually decrease during the month of September, especially during the night and during the second half of it, as the autumn season begins astronomically on the twenty-third of September with the sun perpendicular to the equator and after that it apparently heads south toward the Tropic of Capricorn.

The National Center of Meteorology stated that September, which is the last month of the summer months, is when the influence of the monsoon depression in India gradually weakens and declines, with the country continuing to be affected by thermal depressions extending from the center of the Arabian Peninsula, accompanied by relatively active winds that raise dust, which may lead to decreased horizontal visibility at times.

While the opportunity remains ripe for the formation of cumulonimbus clouds accompanied by rainfall, especially in the eastern region, its impact may extend to some interior areas of the country. The highest amount of rain recorded during September was 86.4 mm in Jebel Hafeet in 2006.

According to the National Center of Meteorology, southeasterly winds prevail at the end of the night and in the morning, turning to northwesterly during the afternoon and evening under the influence of the land/sea breeze cycle.

The percentage of humidity in the air increases slightly during this month compared to August, especially in the second half of it, and the average relative humidity reaches 49%. As a result, the chances of fog/light fog formation in different areas of the country increase.

The eastern regions of the country, especially the mountainous ones, remain under the influence of the Indian monsoon depression, which leads to the formation of cumulus clouds and rainy thunderstorms, and their influence may extend inland, causing rain of varying intensity.

Climatic statistics indicate that the average temperature ranges between 32 and 34 degrees Celsius, the average maximum temperature ranges between 38 and 41 degrees Celsius, and the average minimum temperature ranges between 26 and 29 degrees Celsius.

The highest temperature was recorded at 51.1 degrees Celsius in Mukhairez in 2016, and the lowest temperature was recorded on Jebel Jais in 2015, which reached 16.5 degrees Celsius.

The average wind speed was 11 km/h, and the highest wind speed was 83.9 (km/h) in Qarnain in 2021. The highest wind gust was 109.3 (km/h) at Al Ain Airport in 2008.

While the average maximum relative humidity during September ranged from 68% to 87%, the average minimum relative humidity ranged from 17% to 29%.

The highest year in which fog occurred over the past years was in 2014, when the number of fog occurrences was 14 days of fog and 12 days of light fog.
